The EQuIS data management system was used to examine these results through its EQuIS for ArcGIS Interface. The EQuIS for ArcGIS interface allows users to view and query their EQuIS data as an ArcGIS extension. Additionally, for ArcGIS users, it integrates seamlessly with dozens of third-party commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) applications allowing for greater analytical capabilities than are present in the ArcGIS alone.
For simplicity, only one COTS application was chosen—Golden Software’s Surfer. Through the EQuIS for ArcGIS Interface, Surfer enhances ArcGIS by providing the ability to choose between a dozen different contouring algorithms. Additionally, Surfer is a familiar tool, having long been in use by environmental professionals. Surfer results are, in turn, enhanced when viewed in ArcGIS, which provides a wide array of tools over a large geographic area. Most states, for example, offer coverages of land use patterns and environmental features that can be integrated together with the Surfer imagery.
