Celebrating World Water Day with BIER at the White House
Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable`s Water Commitments Tapped for President`s Water Summit
Today is World Water Day, when we pause to recognize the necessity of protecting and preserving one of our most important natural resources. Water scarcity, resiliency, and stakeholder engagement are just a few of the challenges, and opportunities, where business, governments, not for profits and communities need to work together to ensure effective water stewardship and to improve quality of life in the face of natural disasters, pollution, and increasing demands on water sources.
It was appropriate, then, that the White House chose today to host its first ever Water Summit to promote the importance of water stewardship in the US, and to highlight new commitments and announcements that the Administration and other organizations have made regarding water stewardship.
The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER)--a technical coalition of leading beverage brands, facilitated by Antea Group--is honored to be included as the initiator of two of these commitments:
- A Project Cost Curve Database, currently in development, will collect information on projects related to energy and water conservation at BIER’s 20 global beverage-company members and their 1,800 facilities. BIER members and facilities will be able to use this information to inform the development of their own resource-conservation projects.
- Future Scenarios 2025 will be an integrated effort to explore how access to water and other resources is likely to change over the next decade, and to introduce business leaders and other stakeholders in the beverage industry to practices that could increase water sustainability. This exercise will enable better business connectivity to future, key sustainability business indicators and define those factors and trends that BIER members must pay attention to and help shape.
From the White House report:
Water challenges are facing communities and regions across the United States, impacting millions of lives and costing billions of dollars in damages. Recent events, including recordbreaking drought in the West, severe flooding in the Southeast, and the water-quality crisis in Flint, MI, have elevated a national dialogue on the state of our Nation’s water resources and infrastructure. This dialogue is increasingly important as a growing population and changing climate continue to exacerbate water challenges.
On March 22, 2016—World Water Day—the Obama Administration hosted the first-ever White House Water Summit to shine a spotlight on the importance of cross-cutting, creative solutions to solving the water problems of today, as well as to highlight the innovative strategies that will catalyze change across the ways in which we use, conserve, protect, and think about water in the years to come. As part of the Summit, the Administration called on institutions and organizations from all sectors to make new commitments to build a sustainable water future in the United States.
These commitments, and BIER's inclusion in this prestigious group, illustrate the leadership towards a sustainable water future that BIER has exhibited in the beverage industry since its establishment. “Promoting the sustainable use and protection of water is a business imperative upon which BIER is founded,' says BIER Director and Antea Group Senior Consultant, Tod Christenson. “We are honored to have our commitments recognized by the White House Water Summit on World Water Day,”
At Antea Group, we’re proud to work with such industry leaders and to help make an impact on the preservation and stewardship of our natural resources.
