As a consequence of the modelling exercise in Chapters 2–4, the question arises as to how these models could be extended and improved for large-scale use in the analysis of more detailed, more specific policy options. Before we suggest extensions, generalisations and ramifications of such models for more policy-directed use, we review the state of the art of energy modelling and attempt to derive the lessons that can be learnt to date. As a natural starting point, we examine the world energy and CO2 model of Edmonds and Reilly (1983) and the model of Nordhaus and Yohe (1983).
