Burns & McDonnell provided design services for the construction of a new 40,000-square-foot facility with two automated chemical processing lines at Bell Helicopter Textron Inc.'s Plant 1 in Hurst, Texas. Spaces were provided for associated manufacturing processes, including non-destructive testing, abrasive blasting and adhesive primer application. The facility was laid out utilizing lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. Additional areas were provided for office space, break rooms and hygiene areas.
The chemical processes included phosphoric acid anodizing, aluminum cleaning, titanium pickling and stainless steel etching. Incorporated into the facility was a process water recycle system designed for resource recovery, waste minimization and to reduce the impact on the existing industrial wastewater treatment plant.
A pollution prevention study was performed to determine what point source recovery methods could be cost-effectively incorporated into the project. Evaluated recovery methods include diffusion dialysis, ion exchange, membrane separation, spray rinsing, oil separation and filtration.
