Community Ablution Blocks with DEWATS in eThekwini Municipality
eThekwini is a metropolitan area comprising the City of Durban and its surrounding areas. The total population is approximately 0.6 million. Before the inception of community-based water and sanitation programme in 2004, 150,000 families in eThekwini were estimated to be living in basic shacks and suffering from poor water and sanitation conditions.
The community ablution blocks (CABs) programme was implemented by the eThekwini Health, Architecture and Housing Department, starting in 2004, but in 2008, the project was taken over by eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS). CABs programme was an initiative designed to provide communal water and sanitation facilities to un-served informal settlement in the urban and peri-urban areas of eThekwini.
