The Challenge: Plant Conversion While Maintaining Water Quality

The Portland Water District needed to convert a major chlorine gas feed system to liquid sodium hypochlorite in order to eliminate hazards associated with gas systems and to enhance chlorine residual throughout the distribution system. Wright-Pierce was selected to engineer the project. The largest water treatment facility in Northern New England, the Sebago Lake Water Treatment Facility is operated under a waiver from filtration from the USEPA and is rated for 52 MGD. The process relies on ozonation and chloramination as primary and secondardy disinfectants. The waiver requires that disinfection be maintained at all times and under all operating conditions.
