Cranfield finalists in Green Gown awards
Cranfield University has, once again, been short listed in the prestigious EAUC (The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges) Green Gown Awards.
This year the University has been short listed as finalists in two categories - Courses and Learning and in the Research and Development category. The winners will be announced in November.
Iain Patton, Chief Executive of the EAUC said: “It is fantastic to see more institutions than ever being finalists – the strength and quality of applications is truly inspiring. The breadth of activity within the sector shows that sustainability really does bring positive impacts, both on the institution, their staff and students and the wider community. These finalists are proof that where institutions take sustainability seriously they are reaping the benefits.”
Cranfield is one of 11 Universities finalists in the Courses and Learning category for its submission ‘Framework for a sustainable future: integrating technology, environment and management in policy-making’. Its MSc, The Environment and Public Policy, prepares high quality policy specialists literate in environmental technology, management and engineering, to lead the sustainable policy agenda.
In the Research and Development category Cranfield’s submission ‘Nano Membrane Toilet: a toilet for everyone without water or energy’ was selected along with 6 other universities’ submissions. In response to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s ‘Reinvent the Toilet Challenge’ the Nano Membrane Toilet is being developed to provide a sanitation solution for the 2 billion people who currently don’t have a toilet. It converts waste, producing safe reusable water, without external water, energy or a sewer connection.
Now in their 10th year, the Green Gown Awards, recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK. With sustainability moving up the agenda, the Awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of sustainability excellence within the tertiary education sector, as well as the environmental sector.
In 2013 Cranfield received a Highly Commended in the ‘Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change’ category.
