One of the first demonstration projects undertaken to explore the uses of Recycled Plastic Lumber (RPL) in structures was conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and ODNR at Battelle-Columbus. This project was a feasibility study for investigating if RPL pallets could successfully be used at DOE field sites. A second project demonstrates the performance of RPL in structures subject to extreme environments. This project involved a 1,700-foot long boardwalk in a wetlands area near Kelley’s Island, Ohio on Lake Erie. Plastic lumber from six different manufacturers was used for the decking boards over a wood frame.
