Derivation of water framework directive environmental quality standards
In 2005, the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) proposed that the UKTAG Chemistry Task Team (CTT) should develop standards for certain Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD) List II substances as Annex VIII substances under the Water Framework Directive. These are substances for which EQSs are currently available, i.e. List II parameters as listed in the Dangerous Substances Regulations of 1997 and 1998, and the DoE Circular 7/89. EQS derivation must comply with the methodology given in Annex V of the WFD, which means that new standards must be developed. In addition, a large number of other potential substances of concern were identified from other sources.
Since 2005 we have worked with the Environment Agency of England & Wales and the UKTAG CTT to derive Annex VIII EQS in a collaborative project with WRc. To date our project team has derived over 30 aquatic EQS for metals, pesticides, biocides and industrial chemicals. We have also represented the UK on the European Commission’s Expert Advisory Group on WFD EQS, providing expert advice on biota standards and the use of QSAR and other non-testing approaches to EQS derivation.
