The idea of sustainable consumption was first brought to widespread attention as a global issue. However, government is increasingly applying it, but there is a need for industry to play a vital role in making consumption pattern more sustainable. The dominant approach to managing sustainability issue has been the construction of Environmental Management System (EMS) based on ISO 14001 standard. However, it is feared that the management decision-making will tip the balance too far in favour of business interests as against sustainable consumption interests. A conceptual model for corporate consumption is suggested in terms that provide a context for implementation of EMS based on ISO 14001. In response to inherent uncertainty, a dematerialisation strategy is adopted. The implications of this model for structuring salient elements of EMS are then discussed. The audit would measure the extent to which an organisation has a management system competent to make consumption pattern more sustainable.
