To reduce the emissions from ammonia to the environment the content of ammonium in fly-ash is determined. Depending on the ammonium content it is decided how to dispose the fly-ash or if it can be used as additive, e.g. in concrete.

An easy and reliable method for the determination of ammonium in fly-ash is introduced in this article. The distillation and boric acid titration was performed with the KjelFlex K-360 and Schott TitroLine easy.

The DIN 38406-E5-2 method describes the determination of ammonia in water, waster water and sludge but is adapted for fly-ash in this application note.

The results show high reproducibilty and low relative standard deviations.
