Shampoos, toothpaste, paint, cough medicine--disposing of these items can be a messy job, but for Detox Environmental of Bowmanville, Ontario, it’s all in a day’s work. Detox Environmental is a waste management firm specializing in hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal, recycling, industrial services, emergency response, and chemical waste transportation. To aid them in disposing of the tons of health and beauty products they receive annually, they chose the RS30 industrial shredder from UNTHA-America. Located in Hampton, NH, UNTHA shredding technology America, Inc., is a division of the Austrian-based UNTHA shredding technology GmbH, one of the world’s leading providers of size reduction equipment for the recycling industry.
The RS30 shredder comes from the illustrious RS series, which has been tried and tested for decades. It is well known as a line of powerful, rugged shredders which easily handle difficult operating conditions and multiple-shift continuous operation. “More than 40 years of experience is built into the RS Series,” says Bernhard Mueggler, president and CEO of UNTHA America. “We have thousands of these shredders in daily operation around the globe.”
Detox Environmental purchased two RS30 shredders eight and five years ago respectively. Both shredders were in near constant operation destroying huge amounts of packaging and waste from the beauty product, household product and pharmaceutical industries. “We needed shredders that could destroy not only paint cans, shampoo bottles and medication bottles, but also their contents,” says Simon Ansell, Detox plant manager. “The RS30s did the job. We were very pleased with their performance and reliability all those years.”
So much so that when it came time to replace the machines, Detox once again turned to UNTHA, choosing the newly revamped RS30s to satisfy their shredding needs.
“The new machines have several features that we really like,” says Ansell. “They have a greasing system built into the machines with a grease gun mounted under the cover. Now, to grease the machine you simply pump the gun handle--no more removing the cover. We also like the fact that the new RS30s are enclosed so there is more protection for the equipment and less maintenance.”
Ansell also cited the RS30s new mechanical seals on the gearbox as another key feature. “Before, waste could sometimes get into the gearbox. This was especially a problem in our line of work since we deal with so many liquids, but now the mechanical seals prevent that from happening. We have less downtime and our operation is more efficient.”
For Ansell and Detox, returning to the RS30 was an easy decision. “We were very happy with the performance of the previous machines,” he says. “We know these shredders and felt it made sense for our company to continue with this brand. They serve our needs very well.”
