Development and Applications of a Combined FastGC Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry Instrument

Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS). which is a very sensitive method for real-time gas analysis, has become a widespread technology in the food and flavor research area for over more than 15 years [1]. However, as in this field often isomeric compounds have to be identified and quantified independently, there is a need for additional measures to increase selectivity. In the past traditional Gas Chromatography (GC) has been coupled with PTR-MS instruments [2], which at that time were equipped with quadrupole mass filters and thus only provided information about the nominal masses of product ions. However, this combination sacrifices the ability for real-time analysis, which is one of the major advances of PTR-MS.

Here we introduce a novel approach where we integrate a FastGC column into a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) based PTR-MS instrument and thus complement the advantages of both technologies. We present first results of wine measurements, which are known to be particularly challenging because of the high number of compounds [3].
