The various types of modern materials widely used in engineering works possess high risk of combustion. During combustion of these materials, toxic gases of varying concentrations are generated. Inhalation of toxic combustion products is the major cause of death during fires. Increased knowledge of the combustion products and their toxicity could decrease the risks. This paper describes the development and validation of a Combustion Toxicity Index (CTI) that can be used to compare the toxicity risk of engineering materials on combustion. Quantitatively, the results were in good agreement with literature data. However, the application of the CTI is limited to a relative ranking system for comparison of toxicity risk of engineering materials.

Optimizing VOC Combustion - Case Study
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are pre-cursors to Ozone pollution and subject to EPA regulations. Thermal and catalytic oxidizers are routinely used to destroy VOC emissions from a variety of industrial sources. NOx and CO are common byproducts created in the burning of natural gas. All of these pollutants can be effectively minimized, but the challenge is engineering a solution that has to work within constraints of an existing system while remaining cost effective to operate. We wanted to share the...
Introducing LaserGas III SP CO – a combustion analyzer for rough environments
NEO Monitors unveils the industry’s most compact CO combustion analyzer suitable for the most demanding environments. LaserGas III CO includes measurement of CH4, H2O and temperature in one single unit designed to reduce risk. Based on decades of experience and customer feedback, NEO Monitors has designed an Ex-d certified tunable diode laser (TDLS) analyzer. The instrument is based on the proven LaserGas III platform, and is for those that need CO-monitoring in combustion processes. In combination with...
Why high temperature combustion of landfill gas?
Due to the accumulation of knowledge and the tightening of environmental law, the landfill technology has increasingly become concerned with the management of trace compounds in landfill gas. With landfill gas, contamination is through sulphur, chlorine, fluorine, halogenated hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Other trace elements such as volatile organic compounds (VOC), impose environmental loading factors.High temperature combustion is designed to safely and completely eliminate environmental risk. The "clean"...
The landfill gas collection, utilisation and surplus gas combustion acting in unison
In landfill gas utilisation the basic task of the control system is to harmonise three completely independent processes. On the one hand, there is the gas production of the landfill which is inconstant. (From a price point of view, hardly worthwhile to store the gas in a gasometer) On the other side the independent gas utilisation process, which orientates itself to the requirement of the energy consumer Between them, the flare fulfils the important task of burning off safely surplus gas quantities; and...
Horizontal Mixers for Secondary Combustibles - Case Study
The manufacture of secondary combustibles from household waste, industrial waste and special waste in accordance with statutory requirements is to be a huge challenge for system suppliers in the coming years.Currently, at times, extremely differing substances are treated in such a way that they can be loaded into conventional furnaces. The most important requirement is the detailed control over each treatment stage as well as expertise in the various incineration processes and their resulting requirements. AVA...
