Owing to the recent ageing and decreasing birth rate, providing nursing care to the elderly has become very crucial. As a result, it is necessary to develop wearable systems to aid in nursing care. To realise such a system, we require not only wearable soft actuators, but also a compact and flexible control valve. The purpose of our study is to develop a flexible, lightweight and compact control valve which can be safely attached to the human body. In this study, we proposed and tested a new type of control valve that consists of a vibration motor and a check valve. By giving continuous vibration, the valve can be kept open. As a result, we find that the valve can control a larger flow rate relative to its weight and size. We also apply the control device to a wearable actuator in the form of a McKibben artificial muscle.

WaStop Access protects residents in Lewiston NY, USA - Case Study
Location: Lewiston New York, USA Client: City of Lewiston Problem: The effect of combined sewers (combined wastewater and storm water) and an area prone to flooding from the Niagara River, a section of Upper Mountain Rd in Lewiston New York have experienced repeated flooded basements. On a visit with Jeffery Ritter of the City of Lewiston, Bob Wiltshire of Koester Associates discussed the applications for and advantages of the WaStop in line elastomeric check valve in preventing back flows and flooding. Jeff...
WaStop chosen to protect Forest View residents and property from flooding - Case Study
Location: Forest View Customer: The Village of Forest View Problem: Originally Forest View had a combined sewer and stormwater system. As the area became popular development occurred which lead to more hard surface areas, which lead to higher runoff during rainy periods. This became such a problem that, in the 1960’s the sewer and stormwater system was split to ensure that high rainfall events didn’t overload the sewer system causing backflow into residential properties. The two split systems...
Top 8 things to check when maintaining a Pressure Reducing Valve
Like every other piece of mechanical equipment we use, a control valve does require some maintenance. As budgets are stretched and time is tight, it can be tempting to ignore checking on valves that are often located in underground vaults and give years of operation without complaint, but eventually like everything else, they will fail. This article looks at 8 simple steps that if undertaken occasionally will help to eliminate valve failures that always seem to occur at the most inconvenient times. Here’s...
Tideflex Valves - No Problem Solving Difficult Scenarios
Square openings, existing fixings, angled walls, difficult access? Tideflex can engineer solutions for problematic retrofit and flap valve replacements every time. MeasurIT have been providing solutions to drainage outfall valve problems for almost 20 years. It doesn`t matter if you need to retrofit a valve to a square opening, align it with existing fixings or drilled holes, or fix it to an angled wall - we have come across almost every scenario conceivable, and engineered a solution that works. Tideflex check...
