Using Biological Filtration to Remove Arsenic from Drinking Water
In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency changed the standards for arsenic levels in drinking water. At that time, the agency had estimated that more than 36 million Americans were drinking water that contained arsenic levels at or above 3 parts per billion. A new standard was set, lowering the maximum contaminant level to 10 parts per billion (ppb) from the previous standard of 50 ppb. The EPA Standard The EPA and the World Health Organization were concerned about long-term exposure to arsenic in...
Global Summit on Regulatory Science Will Focus on Nanotechnology Standards and Applications
The 2016 Global Summit on Regulatory Science (GSRS) will be held September 7-9, 2016, in Bethesda, Maryland. Each GSRS meeting focuses on an area of regulatory science that would benefit from discussions aimed at identifying future research directions, and this GSRS meeting will focus on nanotechnology standards and applications, building on an October 11, 2015, GSRS workshop. The 2015 workshop focused on physico-chemical measurements and standards relevant to nanomaterials in the “pristine state” and...
A closer look at VIB’s ‘technology suites for better science’
As modern life sciences become ever more dependent on technology, scientists not only need state-of-the-art equipment at their disposal, they also require high-quality servicing in a wide range of domains. This is exactly what VIB’s Core Facilities aim to offer: leading-edge platforms that enable scientists to exploit the latest technologies to the fullest, supported by the best techno-scientific expertise. Geert Van Minnebruggen, Head of Core Facilities, tells us more about the institutional value of...
EPA Makes Available Supporting Documents for Endangered Species Biological Evaluations
On December 11, 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) made publicly available several documents associated with the Biological Evaluations (BE) for the first three “pilot” chemicals that are being evaluated: chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and malathion. For each chemical, the following supporting documents are now available: problem formulation; fate and effects characterizations; and related appendices. The provisional models are available here. EPA...
Super–resolution optical imaging of binary colloidal assemblies
Evaporation induced self–assembly of micro– and nanospheres exhibits 2D and 3D ordered packing. When particles of two different sizes are used, binary colloidal assemblies (BCAs) form metastructures with novel physical properties. Imaging of BCAs with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) limits the view to a surface morphology only. When fluorescence is incorporated into the individual particles, imaging methods traditionally used in the biological sciences can be applied, such as 3D structured illumination microscop...
