Electrosteel: slow growth, great future

Last year, ferrous scrap accounted for 44% - or some 425 million tonnes - of the metallic raw materials used worldwide in steel production. The balance was made up of iron ore, tonnages of which far exceeded scrap although its ferrous content is, of course, much lower. Of those 425 million tonnes, three-quarters was used in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) operated by the so-called ‘mini-mills’ and the remainder in basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs) run
by the huge integrated steel mills.
