Regardless of recent concerns and the horrific results of disasters on vulnerable populations in the USA, the use of standardised emergency command and control structures in Long-Term Care (LTC) settings has not become common. It is especially true in the American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) population, a unique group in that tribes are sovereign nations within the USA or a 'nation within a nation'. This paper examines (1) the LTC issues in the AN population, (2) the need to address emergency preparedness and disaster management in the AN culture and (3) culturally specific characteristics that must be addressed to allow the preparation and protection of these elders. We must never forget the respect that should be shown to other cultures in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters. There has been a great deal of work in other nations to consider how both modern cultures and indigenous peoples can benefit from each other in these respects. This paper reports work in an ongoing project that will ultimately identify specific interventions to be used in the AN population as we continue efforts to address the issues of vulnerable and underserved groups in our nation.

Is Your Organisation Prepared for the Worst? Emergency Management
Disaster and Emergency Management Systems (DEMS) I have just returned from a week studying Disaster and Emergency Management Systems. It has been a real eye opener. Many of us regard disasters or an emergency as something that happens to someone else. Trust me, the day may come when it will be your organisation and unfortunately, there is often little or no warning. On the 25th June 2007, I managed a sheltered housing scheme in Hull and as I had the day off I planned to take my young children shopping. I...

Emergency Vs. Maintenance Repairs for Utilities.
With populations rising throughout towns and cities in the United States there is a growing need to improve the nation’s water and wastewater infrastructures. Reliable water provisions are needed for continued development and sustenance. At the same time, it is necessary to properly discharge wastewater clinically and efficiently. Much of the inadequacies with water and wastewater assets are blamed on outdated infrastructure since a majority of water delivery and wastewater discharge systems date back to...
A decision support system for water supply emergency management with multiple sources
The construction of water transfer projects brings new challenges to water resources management, especially in water supply security with the use of multiple water sources. However, the operations of water diversion and water supply have been considered in separation in practice. In particular, there are few decision support systems (DSS) designed to tackle the challenges in emergency planning of water transfer operation. This paper describes a generic DSS which is designed for the operation of multiple water...
