This paper presents a powerful argument in support of the linkages between superior environmental performance and superior competitiveness and profitability. Innovest analyzed over 60 different aspects of environmental risk, management and business development in leading global companies from the petroleum, chemicals, forest products, electric utilities and other sectors. Top environmental performers outperformed their industry rivals by fully 17% (1700 basis points) on an annual basis. Moreover, variances as great as 500% were detected in the environmental risk profiles of companies regarded by mainstream Wall Street analysts and rating agencies as virtually identical credit and investment risks. The presentation calls into serious question the traditional industry view of the environment as a pure cost center.
