Equipment CO2 emission in surface coal mining

The continuous global increases in energy demand and the environmental impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents the results of research work related to determination of surface mining equipment CO2 emission, which is part of a broader industrial project on analysis and control of energy consumption. The project was completed at a surface coal mine that is operated by one of the largest North American coal companies. The research results may be used by mining professionals to aid in the determination of carbon footprints for specific mining equipment.
