Exemptions play a significant role in complying with the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.

In order to meet their requirements, companies must understand how exemptions work within the directive and how to apply them to their own programs. Assent Compliance’s materials compliance Subject Matter Expert, Valerie Kuntz, takes an in-depth look at exemptions in her whitepaper European Union RoHS Directive: Understanding Exemptions.

A number of exemptions expired on July 22nd, 2016. But how does that impact their compliance status?

Under the RoHS Directive, many of the exemptions have either been renewed or are currently undergoing a review process. This has an immediate impact on manufacturers using these exemptions to comply with the directive.

Understanding when these exemptions expire, and how the renewal process works, is key to meeting compliance requirements.

Companies should also be aware of the purpose behind RoHS exemptions.

These exemptions were created with the purpose of giving industry time to develop alternative solutions to the restricted substances within their products. Therefore, relying on exemptions to demonstrate compliance is not a sustainable approach to materials management.

Instead, companies should leverage exemptions as a means of moving away from the use of restricted substances, lest they be at risk of falling out of compliance when the exemptions ultimately expire.
