Evaluating the economic, ecological and sustainable feasibility of projects under the clean development mechanism: a case study from sub–Saharan Africa
Courtesy of Inderscience Publishers
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), introduced under the Kyoto Protocol, serves a twofold objective: the reduction of Greenhouse Gases and the promotion of sustainable development in emerging countries. This article addresses this critical issue by analysing a project currently seeking CDM status and assessing its impact on these dual aims, while simultaneously evaluating the successful implementation and feasibility of the venture. The paper applies Macro–environmental assessment tools and reveals the endeavour's threats and opportunities. The author concludes by offering recommendations for further steps needed to achieve the project objectives.
