Evaluation of Novel Operational Strategies for Submerged Membrane Bioreactors

MBR technology is still expensive to operate when compared to more traditional alternatives. The cost of the membrane and its operation is a significant variable in the overall capital and operational costs of an MBR. A novel dynamic scouring aeration control for membrane bioreactors is proposed in this contribution in order to minimize internal fouling of the membrane and increase the maximum permeate flux rate acceptable for design simultaneously. This approach can optimize the operational costs of chemical cleaning by slowing the rate of increase of TMP over time. At the same time it provides opportunities for energy use reduction by matching the periods of low influent flow to the plant with low aeration intensity.
