Evaluation of the Performance of three Bioretention Areas in North Carolina

ABSTRACT

Three bioretention areas constructed in the piedmont and the coastal plain of North Carolina were monitored or will be monitored to determine their effect on water quality. The first bioretention area was constructed in clayey soils in the piedmont, at Graham High School. The other two were in sandy soils in the coastal plain in Rocky Mount and in Wilmington, NC. Several design factors were considered in the design of the three bioretention areas, including ground cover, fill media, in situ soils, and underdrain depth. The bioretention areas in Graham, NC showed a significant reduction in peak flow, all nitrogen species concentrations and loads. There was no significant reduction in phosphorous. Due to infiltration and a internal storage zone in the bioretention area there was a very limited amount of outlet flow from the bioretention areas in Rocky Mount, allowing for little possible analysis.
