Introduction

The new Copenhagen Metro is planned to cross an oil-polluted site with an area of 300 m² with oil concentrations of up to 7,000 mg/kg in the soil and 1-2 mg/l in the groundwater.  The oil pollution at the site arises from leaking underground storage tanks and pipelines belonging to a former service station. In order to reduce the costs of handling the polluted soil and to avoid any potential hazards to the workers, Ørestadsselskabet I/S, the company responsible for the Metro construction, decided to clean up that part of the pollution, which is obstructing the planned Metro works.
