Federal Budget Debates

The Conservative government is accused of “falling asleep at the switch” for failing to renew funding for InfraGuide while Finance Minister Jim Flaherty writes that infrastructure has been “chronically underfunded for years” in the letters section of the March/April issue of ReNew Canada magazine.
“In many urban centres today traffic congestion is stretching out travel times, harming the environment and eroding our quality of life,” wrote Minister Flaherty. “Canada is left with an infrastructure gap that can no longer be ignored.”
But while Flaherty also spoke to his government’s investment in Canada’s national highway system, gateways, public transit and smart commute programs, Robert Hilton accused the Conservatives, in his contribution to the letters section, of “being asleep at the switch by failing to renew funding” for InfraGuide. The federally-funded organization has built a network of volunteers who develop best practices for the infrastructure industry.
“By allowing the project [InfraGuide] to terminate, the Government of Canada has sent a message that it does not really care about the state of infrastructure in this country,” wrote Hilton, who recommends InfraGuide become part of the National Round Table on Sustainable Infrastructure (NRTSI).
“It is not too late to reconstitute InfraGuide but there needs to be a new approach to its governance,” says Hilton.
ReNew Canada magazine, a national, bi-monthly infrastructure renewal magazine, is the voice of Canada’s infrastructure landscape.
Infraguide works collaboratively to create a network advantage within the broad infrastructure community to develop and disseminate best practices and tools that encourage innovation to support sustainable municipal infrastructure decisions and actions that protect and enhance the quality of life of Canadians.
NRTSI (National Round Table on Sustainable Infrastructure) is an initiative of the infrastructure community led by the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE).
