Class B fires are caused because they are involved with flammable liquids such as petroleum, oils, greases, tars, and etc. Class C fires are caused because they involve energized electrical equipment. Class D fires occur because they involve combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium and etc. These classifications of fires can be avoided by have reliable fire protection systems. Some of these protection systems include thermal switch systems which are heat-sensitive units that complete electrical circuits at a specific temperature. They are connected to with each other so if any of the circuits over heat, the switches will start flashing indicate a fire or overheat. Another type of fire system that is used on aircraft is smoke detectors. There are two types of smoke detection systems such as light refraction type and ionization type. The light refraction type consists of photo electronic cell that detects light refracted by smoke particles. If there is any smoke, the photoelectric cell goes off if it senses enough of the light refracted by smoke. The ionization type is a smoke detector that goes off if there is a change in ion density due to smoke in the cabin.
