Flying the green kite at the Cape Town International Kite Festival - case study

Since 2011 NCC has been appointed to provide full environmental management services at the Cape Town International Kite Festival.

The Kite Festival Organisers approached NCC in 2010, to assist with writing up an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the event. Because the event is held on the banks of the Zandvlei Nature Reserve, the organisers have been asked by the Managing Authority to manage the event in a way that does not negatively impact on the environment. Apart from writing the initial EMP, NCC has been assisting the event organisers by auditing the Kite Festival for compliance with the EMP. This auditing process has enabled NCC to suggest mitigation measures as well as develop improved management practices for solid waste, waste water from catering facilities and the education of staff and service providers for the event.

Since 2011, NCC Film and Events has been appointed to provide a full environmental management service to the Kite Festival and through this involvement have been able to address the following important issues:

  • Helping the organisers secure all the necessary permits and permissions from landowners and Managing Authorities thorugh the preparation and submission of an Event Specific EMP.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the implementation of the EMP and providing organisers with advise and practical solutions on how to improve areas of concern.
  • Assessing and managing fire risks.
  • Safe disposal of waste water from catering facilities, by developing a wash basin, which removes all oils and solids from the water before draining into the sewage system.
  • Planning the location of all events facilities close to existing infrastruture and away from rivers and sensitive areas.
  • Preventing (and cleaning if necessary) fuel and oil spills from generators and vehicles.
  • Controlling vehicle movements.
  • Educating service providers on the use of environmentally friendly cleaning agents, recycling, waste management and spillage management.

In 2011 NCC also developed and sponsored two recycling centres at the event and feel that this is a good way to get event participants and spectators to assist the event organisers to 'fly the green kite'. For the 2012 event, NCC aims to facilitate an education drive by the Zandvlei Trust and to further minimise the events environmental impacts.
