Today wood fuels are well established in the Swedish energy system. The sector is big, growing fast and can become much larger. Since 1980 wood fuels have five-folded their share in Sweden’s energy provision.
This has contributed to a dramatic decline in oil imports. In today’s Sweden, wood fuels stand for some 50 TWh, mainly in the form of heating but also as electricity.
The use of wood fuels is long-term sustainable
and contributes to a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases, decreased acidification when ash is recirculated and quality improvement for forestry. Wood fuels are comparatively inexpensive and have good developmental potential. Many estimate that wood fuels can contribute more than twice as much energy as today. This can take place without threatening the biodiversity of forests.
