The Swedish transport sector is dependent on imported oil. A switch to domestic bio-fuels for transports would make us less vulnerable, create jobs and be better for the environment. An EU directive from 2003 states that the share of biofuels or other renewable fuels is to increase gradually up to 5.75 percent by 2010. To achieve this, long-term economic and tax policy incentives, a standardization of biofuels, continued state support for research, development
and demonstration as well as continued purchases of biofuel vehicles are required. A large-scale introduction of bio-fuels for transports implies that the price relation vis-à-vis fossil fuels reflects the fuels’ real environmental costs. The technique for producing and using biofuels for transports also needs continued development to reduce costs.
