When Netherlands-based Fugro (FUnderingstechniek en GROndmechanica) was founded in 1962, they began providing oil, gas, mining and civil engineering and construction companies with surveys of soil and rock data to help them make informed decisions about future operations. Today, the company serves corporations all around the world – with more than 12,000 employees working in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Fugro extended its business activities through a combination of organic growth and acquiring companies with complementary expertise in the collection, processing and interpretation of data relating to the earth’s surface and subsurface.

In 2008, a team of HSE professionals from Fugro’s eight different business lines came together and agreed that the company needed a single enterprise-level system for HSE data management and lessons learned. They knew that this system would enable them to standardize and streamline the management of risk information across their global organization and yet it would have to be flexible enough to work within Fugro’s multi-cultural operating global environment. After looking at several leading products, they choose IHS IMPACT ERM software, part of the IHS Operational Risk Solution “Fugro is a decentralized organization delivering a wide range of services. Our companies collaborate providing integrated solutions that match our customer’s requirements,” explained Chris Mellor, Project Manager for IMPACT Implementation at Fugro. “That’s one of our biggest strengths. We are intensely customer-focused and have a lot of local knowledge. We enable the operating companies to do what they do best – serve our customers’ needs – but, we realized some of our corporate systems need to be centralized to ensure responsible reporting and improve risk management.”

Today, more than 400 employees working across all 150 of Fugro’s operating companies worldwide are using IHS IMPACT ERM to log vital HSE data, including more than 4,500 incident records and nearly 60,000 observations about company operations. The project implementation team is headed up by Mellor and Chris Wilkes, HSE Advisor at Fugro. “If you imagine 150 operating companies, you have 150 legacy HSE Management systems. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses,' Mellor continued. “By establishing a single, centralized system, we can now standardize the way we capture and manage our information. Consistent processes and data are helping us to promote transparency and accountability across the entire company.”
