The Han River is the largest river in South Korea in terms of its length, drainage and mean annual discharge. The river is of importance for cultural and economic reasos because it is a unique source of drinking water for more than 20 million people living in Seoul and its surrounding areas. Intensive industrial development in Seoul during the last four decades has greatly increased the risk for pollution of river water and deterioration of water quality.
