Global Warming – A Hot Spot in the News, A Call to Action for Environmental Professionals
Over the past several months there have been numerous media events that have drawn attention to the green house gas (GHG) and global warming issue. Issues including causes and effects have been magnified and brought center stage. The time for interest and action by environmental professionals is now upon us. We wanted to take this opportunity to provide you a briefing of some relevant reports on the subject and elaborate on our involvement in discussions in Pennsylvania.
Fixtures that are exposed to high ambient temperatures are prone to failure and malfunction. In industrial facilities with high lighting consumption rates, this is can be a complex issue to address, especially in hazardous locations where explosive dust and vapors are present. As a solution, establishments may apply explosion proof metal halide and incandescent fixtures with external ballasts.
Electrical Ballasts
Electrical ballasts are designed to monitor and limit the amount of current in a circuit. The two...
Situated in the south west of Wales, in a largely rural area bordering the Brecon Beacons, Carmarthenshire’s air quality is predominantly good. However, there are areas of concern where major roads pass through some of the County’s larger towns, including Llanelli, Carmarthen and Llandeilo, where air quality is dominated by the effects of road traffic. The County Council is therefore testing new monitoring technologies so that it will be better able to track the effects of improvement measures.

Some of the world`s most intricate infrastructure is found in power plants, chemical plants, refineries, and other factories that use and combine industrial chemicals. The piping for fuel, chemical transport, water supply, and cooling needs is typically very complex and subject to high temperatures and pressures. And since plants are harsh environments, it`s a given that piping needs regular maintenance, repair, and rerouting. But shutting down entire lines is often considered an impossibility: practical realities...
DROSRITE is a salt-free process for the recovery of metal from dross. In addition to producing a salt-free residue, it does not produce any CO2 or NOx gases. The process is highly energy efficient, extracting heat from energy in the residue and, thus, it does not require an external heat source such as a plasma torch, an electric arc or a gas or oil burner.A DROSRITE pilot unit built by PyroGenesis was used for an extensive series of 50 tests on the site of an aluminum smelter.. Hot dross, charged into the...
An original procedure based on the Extended Exergy Accounting method is described and implemented in this paper. The goal is the quantification of the environmental externality linked to the chemical pollutants released by an elevated flare stack (SOx and NOx). The extended exergy calculations provide a measure of both the exergy flux released into the environment by the stack and its 'cost' in primary resource equivalents. Idealised processes are assumed for the effluent treatment, but nevertheless, it is shown...
