Meat plants tend to be major producers of fats and grease and this present problems in the wastewater infrastructure as it is not soluble in water. This leads to build up in drains and grease traps and the traditional approach to disposal is to physically remove it and ship it off site for licensed disposal.

A new approach is to use bioaugmentation to physically degrade the grease so that it can be finally treated in the wastewater treatment plant. This method is completely compatible with subsequent wastewater treatment. It allows for planned maintenance and eliminates the need for emergency pumpouts due to blockages. It is a very environmentally friendly solution to a dirty off site disposal issue.
