Ground Water Remediation Case Study

The Pine Street Barge Canal Superfund Site is located along the coast of Lake Champlain. Sediments in the canal were contaminated by historic dumping of various materials including coal tar, solvents and petroleum products. Terra Contracting Services, LLC (Terra) was retained to implement the remedial design. Terra subcontracted with Global Environmental Engineering Inc. (Global) to provide project
management services to assure the project was constructed according specifications within the specified schedule and budget.

Contaminated sediments were first removed from the surface of a previous cap using Terra’s patented Sed-Vac© technology. Contaminated sediments and water were processed on site and soils were disposed of at a landfill. Upon completion of the removal of the contaminated sediments, a new cap was installed using three layers of material. Each layer of capping material presented unique challenges in deployment, which required Global's innovation and adaptability.

Global was retained to assist with the project approximately two months after project initiation. The project was behind schedule and was facing several problems with which Terra requested assistance. Global’s project manager, with invaluable assistance of Terra staff, addressed each issue as it arose, found excellent solutions that increased the speed at which the process was completed, and insured the quality of the final remedy. The project was completed ahead of schedule.
