Composted material boosts sustainable growing media
Composted material can be a major cost-effective component of growing media being not only a sustainable, well-structured substrate but also a source of nutrients and buffering capacity.
What is composted material?
In the United Kingdom, composted material is made by composting source-separated plant materials, mainly from parks and gardens. The composting process is carefully controlled to produce a high quality product, as defined by the British Standards Institution’s Publicly Available Specification for Composted Materials – BSI PAS 100 (2002). Compost conformity should be independently assessed and verified through a certification scheme such as that managed by the Composting Association. Composted material is a natural partner in growing media for peat, bark and other substrates which complement the benefits and other special properties of composted material.
