High mercury loadings to the Arctic

0
During the first week of October an AMAP (Arctic Monitoing and Assessment Programme) conference was held at Rovaniemi in Finland.

One of the hot shots was the mercury depletion events we are measuring in the Arctic during polar sunrise. During these episodes relatively unreactive mercury are transformed to more reactive species of mercury.

These species are deposited on the ground and we believe these processes doubles the input of mercury to the Arctic at a time when the ecosystems are wakening up.

NILU is doing this kind of research at Ny-Ă…lesund, Svalbard. Responsible scientist is Dr. Torunn Berg.
