Baxter International Inc. is a global healthcare company that, through its subsidiaries, assists health-care professionals and their patients with treatment of complex medical conditions. In total, the company has 250 global facilities and is represented in more than 110 countries around the world, employing more than 48,000 team members. Baxter produces approximately 200 biopharmaceuticals, most of which are liquid and require a safety data sheet SDS for safe handling.

The challenge

The company purchased a commercial SDS authoring system that was hosted on its servers. Although this commercial system met initial needs, it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the system due to product support and platform issues. In addition, Baxter’s already strained IT staff had to maintain the server and program, and perform quarterly regulatory updates. The company needed a comprehensive authoring software solution in a hosted environment, from a vendor that would relieve them of ongoing maintenance and updates.

Baxter required an SDS authoring solution that included:

  • Customizable formats
  • A reduction or elimination of its IT involvement
  • Seamless, hassle free operation
  • Hosted environment
  • Regular quarterly updates

The solution

Baxter re-evaluated hazard communication software vendors to replace its current vendor. Its decision criteria included client experience, regulatory knowledge and industry expertise. The company also evaluated firms based on IT infrastructure and the ability to potentially serve as a back-end technology partner. Based on this criteria, Baxter chose UL The Wercs.

UL The Wercs completely migrated all legacy data, setup the customized formats, transferred all data components and finalized all product formulations. This implementation relieved Baxter of the need to host its own authoring solution, and as a result, the company was able to dramatically reduce IT costs. The company also benefitted from:

  • Seamless updates to the application and formulation database
  • Peace of mind thanks to automatic quarterly regulatory updates
  • Optimized use of the company’s IT resources

Baxter could rest assured that its system is working at an optimum level due to all updates being managed by UL The Wercs’ staff. Baxter no longer wastes time scheduling support from the IT department and the system can now be efficiently operated by one full-time employee.
