Strategies to limit the detrimental impact of human population growth must seek not only to limit the number of humans on the planet but also to provide for the reservation of the biological diversity that population growth threatens to destroy. Balancing human numbers with biological support systems is the key to finding a sustainable future. Efforts to protect biological diversity can further the population debate by identifying the real effects and limits of population growth, and by identifying the relationship between biological degradation and human population growth.
