The IES has been monitoring the devastating forest fires that destroyed large areas in Southern Europe, in particular in Greece, Southern Italy and the Canary Islands. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), hosted by the IES, recorded for Greece more than 180 000 ha of burnt forests in the days 24-26 August alone. Because of the critical situation, the IES published two press releases on forest fires during August, attracting 200 items of media feedback, inclu-ding an interview with IES staff member Paulo Bar-bosa aired in the prime time edition of Germany's TV news Tagesschau.

EFAS Rhine flood alerts sent to Germany
On the 6th of August, the European Flood Alert System (EFAS) forecasted potential severe flooding in Switzerland and Germany, in the Upper and Middle Rhine river. Flood alert reports have been sent out that day to the relevant authorities in Germany and the Netherlands (Switzerland not being an EFAS member yet). Major flooding started on 9th and 10th August, with the Swiss part being most severely hit.
