Even though there are considerable economic benefits associated with investments in infrastructure to treat wastewater, 90% of wastewater is discharged daily untreated into rivers and seas spreading disease to humans and damaging key aquatic ecosystems.  Even in situations where investments have been made, the efficacy of the investments to reach the desired result is severely compromised when wastewater treatment assets are poorly operated or maintained.
