Collaborative R&D is studied from the perspective of firms that participate in joint projects with other firms and research organisations. The analysis is based on biotechnology projects funded by the European Commission. An empirical typology of projects is related to the intensity of knowledge transfer. The main conclusion is that industrial penetration is low, that knowledge transfer is a two-way process between firms and universities, and that the distance between the results of the projects and the market is large.
