Industrial pollution scenario due to discharge of waste water effluents along Dombivali Industrial Belt of Mumbai, India - a physico–chemical study

The paper deals with the study of physico–chemical parameters of industrial effluents discharged from different manufacturing industries situated along the Dombivali Industrial Belt of Mumbai, India. From the results it was observed that the conductivity, salinity, cyanide, TS and COD content of the effluents released from dyeing industries were maximum having the respective values of 23,287 µS/cm, 16.63 mg/kg, 0.099, 20,886 and 6,445 mg/L respectively. The effluents from dyeing industries were found to have lowest DO level of 3.63 mg/L. The alkalinity and phosphate content was maximum in the effluents discharged from textile industries having the values of 1,434 and 51.01 mg/L respectively. The effluents from fine chemical industries were found to be very hard having the hardness level of 1,755 mg/L and exhibit highest BOD level of 547 mg/L. These industrial effluents if released in the nearby water bodies may create threat to its biological life.
