Inland Waters of Ohio, a Division of Inland Services, is a part of a 1,100 employee environmental industrial services company. Among the services that Inland provides at airports are the containment, collection, management, recovery and recycling of spent Aircraft Deicing Fluid (SADF). At Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Inland collects spent ADF using ground recovery vehicles, and then recycles the glycol portion of the spent ADF into a valuable coolant/antifreeze for transportation vehicles and other industrial uses.

Wastewater Description
Several hundred thousand gallons of spent ADF and storm water are processed by the Airport each year. The concentration of spent ADF in the storm water is approximately 6%-25% and it contains grit, sand and hydrocarbons.

Wastewater Disposal Goals
The airport’s goal was to find the lowest cost solution to treat and dispose of the spent ADF and storm water that would meet permit requirements and not interfere with Airport operations.

Wastewater Treatment Challenge
Discharge of the SADF to the sanitary sewer is limited by daily limits for Chemical Oxidation Demand (COD). SADF is 88% propylene glycol which has very high COD content. Discharge costs are also very high, due to the concentrated levels of COD. Because the airport could only discharge small volumes of SADF, the airport also required more storm water storage. Consequently, the airport contracted with a waste disposal company to transport and dispose of several hundred thousand gallons per season at a cost of $1.00 per gallon.
