Innovation has long been recognised as the mainspring of economic growth. But only in the last two decades or so has economic theory started to come to grips with the complexity of cause and effect in technological progress. In this paper, the author shows a relationship between innovation and its uncertainty; between sources of innovative strategies and typical innovation strategies. It can be a short framework to encompass the basic question of the "who, what, when, and where" of innovation, combining theoretical discussion with abundant examples. Because of the crucial importance of innovation, this text can be a guidance for those who are looking to understand the value of innovation.
