Inter‐species rootstocks affect cadmium accumulation in post‐grafting generation plants of potential Cd‐hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum

Pot and field experiments were conducted to study the effects of inter‐species rootstocks on cadmium (Cd) accumulation characteristics of potential Cd‐hyperaccumulator Solanum photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation plants. Four treatments [ungrafted (UG) and S. photeinocarpum seedlings grafted on the rootstocks of eggplant (EG), potato (PG) and tomato (TG)] were utilized in present study. In the two pot experiments, EG and PG reduced biomass of S. photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation plants, whereas TG increased shoot biomass compared with the control (UG). TG increased and EG decreased Cd contents in shoots of S. photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation compared with UG. Only TG increased Cd extraction by shoots of S. photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation compared with UG. In the field experiment, only TG increased shoot Cd content of S. photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation by 8.31% and shoot Cd extraction by 9.30% compared with UG. Therefore, use of tomato as rootstock could enhance the ability of Solanum photeinocarpum post‐grafting generation plants to remediate Cd‐contaminated soil. This article is protected by copyright.
