The present work reports the results of an entropy generation analysis on a symmetric flow distributor. The entropy generation minimisation method (EGM) was applied in order to lower the intrinsic irreversibilities associated to the geometric configuration of the flow pattern, aiming to improve the uniformity of flow distribution. 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods were used to simulate the flow conditions, including a local entropy generation model. The implementation of the entropy generation minimisation method enabled to achieve a significant optimisation of the original design.

Urban stormwater inundation simulation based on SWMM and diffusive overland-flow model
With rapid urbanization, inundation-induced property losses have become more and more severe. Urban inundation modeling is an effective way to reduce these losses. This paper introduces a simplified urban stormwater inundation simulation model based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and a geographic information system (GIS)-based diffusive overland-flow model. SWMM is applied for computation of flows in storm sewer systems and flooding flows at junctions,...
Effectiveness of septage pre-treatment in vertical flow constructed wetlands
Septage is wastewater stored temporarily in cesspools. A periodic supply of its significant quantities to small municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may cause many operational problems. In the frame of the research, it has been proposed to utilize vertical flow constructed wetlands for pre-treatment of septage prior to its input to the biological stage of a WWTP. The aim of the work was to assess the effectiveness of pre-treatment in relation to factors such as: seasonality, hydraulic load, pollutants...
Assessing methods for estimating roughness coefficient in a vegetated marsh area using Delft3D
A Delft3D-FLOW model was used to simulate tidal flow in Davis pond marsh in Louisiana, USA. The study area is a freshwater marsh consisting of one main channel and floodplain. Vegetation-induced flow resistance greatly influences tidal flow dynamics in the marsh. This study evaluated eight approaches to estimate vegetation roughness, including two constant Manning's n values, four empirical relations for calculating n, and two methods for calculating Chezy's C values originally embedded in the Delft3D model....
Modeling effect of cover condition and soil type on rotavirus transport in surface flow
Runoff from animal production facilities contains various microbial pathogens which pose a health hazard to both humans and animals. Rotavirus is a frequently detected pathogen in agricultural runoff and the leading cause of death among children around the world. Diarrheal infection caused by rotavirus causes more than two million hospitalizations and death of more than 500,000 children every year. Very little information is available on the environmental factors governing rotavirus transport in surface runoff....
Determination of Flow Rates in part-filled Applications using the Radar Method
Introduction The radar measurement method plays an increasingly important role in the water and wastewater field. This is particularly reflected by the "Metering outside of the medium" trend. Flow measurement using radar which enables contactless measurements thus becomes a major focal point. It features a wide range of applications and hence is useful as permanent measurement system for many applications with part filled pipes or canals in the water and wastewater field. Flow Rate Determination The determinatio...
