Just How Often are Drugs that are Supposed to be Sterile, Actually Contaminated?
A few weeks ago, NBC News published the report, “Sterile drugs often contaminated, pharmacists admit.” The article was written shortly after the peak of the fungal meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated injections that resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of infections.
The article references a poll conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The poll found that 13% believed that “contamination had occurred in the compounded sterile drugs made by their shops last year.” The article goes on to state, “And nearly three-quarters of the 412 health care practitioners who responded said that contamination certainly could occur in drugs from their sites that were supposed to be sterile.”
The sterility of the nation’s prescription drug supply is a critical issue for drug manufacturers, healthcare providers and the general public. EMSL Analytical, an FDA registered laboratory, has years of experience helping to test products to help determine that they are safe for use.
“EMSL’s staff has the expertise and advanced instrumentation and isolators necessary to rapidly identify issues in the manufacturing process,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical. “Failure to prevent these types of problems can lead to illnesses and deaths, expensive lawsuits and even plant closures.”
The scientists at EMSL can provide a wide array of laboratory support ranging from stability or end-of-use testing, contamination source tracking and sterility.
