  • Soft subgrade remedies under heavy axle loads - 2.5-year TTCI test results - Case Study

Rapid track geometry degradation can occur under heavy axle loads. Several proposed remedies for this deterioration have been evaluated on the Heavy Tonnage Loop at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., Pueblo, Colo. A 700-foot-long, soft-subgrade test track, installed in the HTL, provides a nominal track modulus of 2,000-to-2,500 lb/in./in. This section is referred to as the low track ...

  • Transport and fate of phosphorus during and after manure spill simulations

Animal manure spills contribute to P loading of surface waters and little is known about the effectiveness of the current manure spill clean-up methods to mitigate P contamination. Manure spill clean-up consists of containing, removing, and land applying the contaminated water column, while P-enriched fluvial sediments remain in place. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (i) ...

  • The power of precise remediation

Design matters in in-situ remediation. Just ask Resource Geoscience, Inc. (RGI), a Remediation Products, Inc. BOS 200 approved installer and certified Trap and Treat Consultant. They recently demonstrated that when paired with proper injection design and precise application, BOS 200 can get the job done where others fail. The site:  Contaminated clay site in Colorado ...

  • The possible reduction pathways of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) by sulfide under simulated anaerobic conditions

To predict the final fate of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and its intermediates in an anaerobic fermentative solution containing reduced sulfur species and to provide a basis for the adoption of remediation methods, we investigated the pathways of TNT (TNT0 = 50 mg/L) reduction by Na2S at 30 ± 1 °C in an acetic acid–sodium bicarbonate buffer. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) was ...

  • Mitigation of workplace radon gas concentration using high–performance epoxy resin coating

The indoor radon gas released from concrete was measured using a 0.65 × 0.65 × 0.65 m fabricated concrete slab room, simulating a workplace. The indoor radon gas concentration was monitored, and the remediation method was examined. Radon concentrations were monitored using Radon Monitor Model 1023 from Sun Nuclear. Results show that average radon concentrations reached 111 Bq.m

  • The Power of EQuIS in Environmental Management and Decision Analysis: Case Studies in Colorado (PDF)

Selecting an optimal remediation strategy for environmental sites is never a straightforward, easy process. Successful management and decision analysis requires not only the availability of spatial, chemical, and geologic data, but also an integrated environmental quality information system which allows a project manager to utilize and analyze the data. EarthSoft’s Environmental Quality ...

  • Enumeration of sulphate-reducing bacteria for assessing potential for hydrogen sulphide production in urban drainage systems

Urban drainage structures have increasing demands which can lead to increasing hydrogen sulphide related problems forming in places where they have not previously been prevalent. This puts pressure on the methods currently used to monitor and diagnose these problems and more sophisticated methods may be needed for identifying the origin of the problems. Molecular microbiological techniques, ...

  • TCE Remediation in Saprolite and Bedrock Aquifers

Site Summary Subsurface investigations at this operating manufacturing facility revealed TCE contamination in saprolite and bedrock aquifers. The complicated site geology created the need for a remedial strategy effective in tight soil and fractured bedrock. Accelerated bioremediation using HRC was selected for a pilot study because its use offered a remedial method that would not interrupt ...

  • Pros & Cons of Remediation Structures with Chinese Drywall

Mr. Mulholland addresses pros and cons of the four main approaches to remediation of structures with Defective (Chinese) Drywall. There are many methods or approaches to remediation practices in the construction industry. The current crisis with defective Chinese drywall that is diffusing low levels of sulfur compounds like hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide and others creates a ...

  • Different Methods of Groundwater Remediation

Groundwater remediation is essential in a wide range of businesses, from drinking water extraction to mining. It’s hugely important to have the best water treatment system in place to help. Here are a few different methods that are used in water remediation that you may need to incorporate into your plan. Physical Remediation Water purification starts on a ...

  • Case Study: Royal Albert Basin, Beckton

The site comprises of five separate areas totalling circa 100 acres of land contaminated by previous uses as inter alia, a dump for gas works wastes, oil storage and distribution, paint production, coal storage, petroleum wharfage etc. The site as a whole is to be redeveloped for mixed residential, commercial and industrial uses with public open space and landscaping to suit. The contract has ...

  • Methods for the control of oil vapour emissions

There are many oil vapours to discharge from oil containers into the atmosphere in oil operations (such as storage and loading). Two basic concepts are discussed regarding the control of oil vapour emission (OVE). The first is to invent active methods to restrain the OVE. The second is to develop passive tail–end remediation technologies to control the released vapour. Oil vapour recovery ...

  • GCW as a means of efficiently remediating contaminated groundwater

With the conventional 'Pump & Treat' method, groundwater is normally extracted from one or several wells, cleaned above ground and disposed off to the either groundwater or surface water. Even when extraction and injection wells are combined, predominantly higher perme-able areas are preferentially penetrated and more fine-grained structures are circumflowed. The bulk of contaminants are ...

  • Zerovalent Iron nanoparticles for treatment of ground water contaminated by Hexachlorocyclohexanes

Ground water and aquifer samples from a site contaminated by hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs; C6H6Cl6) were exposed to nanoscale iron particles to evaluate the technology as a potential remediation method. The summed concentration of the HCH isomers in ground water was approximately 5.16 µmol L–1 (1500 µg L–1). Batch experiments with 2.2 to 27.0 g L–1 iron nanoparticles showed that more than 95% of ...
