Kirk Environmental constructs Biffa`s `super AD facility` case study

Courtesy of KIRK UK

Contracting for Biffa, Kirk Environmental constructed the UK's largest anaerobic digestion plant capable of processing up to 120,000 tonnes of food waste every year. The plant will produce enough energy to power up to 6,000 homes which will be diverted to the national grid.

Kirk Environmental constructed the 5 4800m² Glass Coated Steel Digestion Tanks complete with Stainless Steel Roofs. The plant is the flagship facility for a series of 'super' AD facilities that Biffa is hoping to develop.

The tanks will treat mainly commercial and industrial food waste from the likes of Sainsbury's and Bakkavor.

  • Largest plant in UK
  • Will produce enough renewable energy to power 6,000 homes
  • Soil improver as by product to be used as type of compost
  • 5 x 4,800m² Tanks
